Meet our alumni of the month
Amanda's Story
Amanda, fondly known as “M” by her friends, has a story that reflects the transformative power of Generosity, Gratitude, and Community. Struggling with addiction, Amanda’s life unravelled in ways she never thought possible. One of our alumni introduced her to Fresh Start Recovery and invited her to several events. These experiences were the beginning of a remarkable journey. Amanda began to connect with others who had walked the path of recovery. Her introduction to the rooms of recovery and her growing relationship with Fresh Start’s alumni gave her hope and courage to seek help. She contacted our intake team, was placed on the waitlist, and called daily to stay connected. Her determination, supported by the community she found, helped her maintain 60 days of sobriety before stepping through the doors of Fresh Start.

Amanda’s recovery journey continued in our Lethbridge facility, where she quickly became an integral part of the community. When she completed the first phase of treatment, Amanda expressed immense gratitude for the opportunity to move into one of our new post-treatment apartments. Amanda continues to live in one of the apartments with her youngest son, who is back in her life full-time. These 36 homes are designed to bridge the gap between treatment and long-term recovery, and Amanda’s time there has been a testament to their value.
In November, she celebrated her first year of continuous sobriety, a milestone that has transformed her life and the lives of those around her. Amanda speaks with heartfelt emotion about having her family back, a reality she once thought was impossible. Today, she has her parents and all three of her sons, aged 19 to 9, back in her life. Their reconnection is a testament to the healing power of recovery and the community surrounding her.
Amanda’s involvement with Fresh Start has deepened over time. She attends all alumni meetings and milestone celebrations, volunteers at every Fresh Start event, and often brings her youngest son along. Her commitment to giving back has made her a cornerstone of our alumni community. She joined the Alumni Association and quickly took on the role of merchandise chair. She is now responsible for the wonderful swag that alumni, family, and friends proudly wear to support recovery.

Her passion for service doesn’t stop there. Amanda is nearing the completion of her Recovery Coach Training, a program that will allow her to support others on their paths to sobriety. Her dedication to learning and growth reflects her gratitude for the community that helped her find her way.
Amanda’s story is one of hope, resilience, and the incredible impact of recovery. She exemplifies what it means to rebuild one’s life and lift others up in the process. Her journey inspires us to continue fostering the connections that make recovery possible.
