Message from Stephanie
“Addiction is highly prevalent and affects everyone. I have a strong interest in supporting Fresh Start which offers an integrated approach of in-house and in-community support to individuals and their families. This approach and the dedicated staff at Fresh Start offer individuals the best chance for lasting sobriety.”

Glen Rumpel
Director, 2016
Message from Glen
"My first recollection of an alcoholic was my father when I was around six. That same year he joined AA, got sober and went on to live an incredible rewarding life. He often said that the program saved his life. I guess you could say I followed in my father’s footsteps finding sobriety at the age of 34. The last 28 years have been a constant reminder of what one can achieve when you get clean. I have witnessed firsthand what addiction looks like in the eyes of a family. I have lost a son and brother to drugs. If my being on the board of Fresh Start results in saving just one soul from the disease of addiction and then I will consider my time well served."

Jan Gryckiewicz
Director, 2016
Message from Jan
"Addiction has impacted both my personal and business life .. I would like to help both the addict and their families battle this terrible disease and the epidemic it has become."

Harley Crowshoe
Director, 2022
Message from Harley
"Harley Crowshoe’s ancestry is Blackfoot and originates from the Piikani Nation Reserve in southern Alberta.
Harley has extensive Aboriginal Policing experience with First Nations people in Alberta and British Columbia. Throughout his RCMP career he held supervisory positions as a Detachment Commander in “K” (AB) and “E” (BC) Divisions. After more than 20 years of service with the RCMP he retired at the rank of Staff Sgt.
Harley joined the Aboriginal Policing Directorate as the Regional Manager, responsible for Alberta and North West Territories. This provided him the opportunity to continue working closely with the First Nations communities in Alberta and NWT.
Harley has worked for AHS for many years, first serving the AHS Wisdom Council as chair; then the AHS South Zone as the Indigenous Health Senior Advisor; the AHS South Sector as Indigenous Health Provincial Director; and has supported AHS as an Indigenous Health Advisor. He is retired, but works parttime with Aakom-kiyii Health Service guiding their accreditation journey. He also sits on a number of committees, including a Member of the National Advisory Committee on Missing Children and Unmarked Burials."

Dan Fox
Director, 2025
Message from Dan
Ómahksípiitaa - Big Eagle
Through the wisdom and guidance of his Elders and his late mother, Ómahksípiitaa - Big Eagle (Dan Fox) has become an advocate for the buffalo and for Blackfoot cultural revitalization. Dan was born and raised on the Blood Reserve as a member of the Many Children Clan. Dan and his family operate a ranch just north of Cardston, where the bison he raises become the bridge to span the relationship and cultural gaps that exist between Blackfoot Elders and youth, and between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.
Dan also works in the realm of social work as an Indigenous Health Liaison with AHS out of Pincher Creek, where he helps to bridge the gap between medical professionals and Indigenous patients. He has also worked with Children's Services to connect Blackfoot children in foster care with their family, language and culture within the Kainai community as a supervisor of the Blackfoot Language & Culture Program, was a Crisis Response worker with Kainai Mental Health for 26 years (on-call rotation) and was a supervisor of Kainai Corrections for 24 years where the focus was rehabilitation through the Blackfoot Culture.
For Dan, Blackfoot Culture and the bison are his walk of life. The bison are a tool for him to translate and share knowledge between worlds. He believes strongly in Iiyikssko–or the importance of creating a path or leaving a legacy to follow for the generations that come after you.
Fresh Start employs a staff of dedicated and compassionate professionals.
I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to each member of this eclectic, ever-growing, and changing family. Our journey together has been one of growth, learning, and connection, a direct reflection of the incredible talent, dedication, and heart that lies within this organization.
The synergy we’ve cultivated as a community has strengthened our foundation and opened doors to new and amazing opportunities, allowing us to expand and enhance the services we provide to those in need. It is only through your hard work, dedication, and the electric energy you bring each day that Fresh Start continues to evolve into something greater than any one of us could achieve alone.
I often reflect on the path that has led me here, and I find it impossible to separate my role from the impact so many of you have had on my life and leadership. I stand here because of the mentorship, guidance, and love I have received from those of you who helped shape my path — and from all of you who continue to walk it alongside me.
Leadership is not a solo act. Tomorrow's leaders surround me. The space we share is shaped by the collective strength of people who show up, give their best, and believe in something bigger than themselves. I see that belief in each of you, and I am profoundly grateful to be part of this journey with such remarkable individuals.
Thank you for trusting, walking and following.
With gratitude and respect,
Bruce
